Aripiprazole Brand And Generic Names

Aripiprazole belongs to a group of medicines called antipsychotics. It is used to treat patients who suffer from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In combination with other medicines it may be used for treating depression disorders in adults.  It is also used for those who have symptoms of irritability and symptoms of aggression, emotional flatness, incoherent speech and behavior, suspiciousness or feeling and seeing things that are not there.

Who should take Aripiprazole?

Patients who are diagnosed with clinical depression most of the time are prescribed an antidepressant. However, in a big number of cases there is either no improvement or not enough.

Aripiprazole is a prescription medication for patients with depression who are not responding well enough to the drugs they are currently prescribed. Patients, who combine Abifily with other antidepressant medication in their cycle, may increase their chances of recovery. 

In children, from age 6 years old and up, Aripiprazole  can be used to treat mood swings, temper tantrums, and self-injury related to autistic disorder.

According to the results of clinical studies, improvements may be felt within 7-14 days.

Before taking Aripiprazole

  • Tell your doctor if you have any of this or other medical conditions:
  • Have allergies to any medicines or any other substances such as foods, preservatives or dyes
  • if you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant
  • low blood pressure
  • problems with your heart or blood vessels
  • high blood sugar or diabetes
  • alcohol or drug abuse or dependence or a history of one of these
  • venous thromboembolism or are at risk of venous thromboembolism
  • if you are taking any other medicines, including the ones that you buy without a prescription from your pharmacy.


Prior to taking Abifily, you are strongly advised to consult your doctor or pharmacist because the product  may contain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions or negative side effects.

How to take Aripiprazole?

Aripiprazole comes in form of:

  • Tablets: 2 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg, 20 mg, 30 mg
  • Orally disintegrating tablets: 10 mg, 15 mg
  • Liquid suspension (ARIPIPRAZOLE Oral Solution is a clear, colorless to light yellow solution available in 1 mg/mL.)
  • Injection (ARIPIPRAZOLE Injection is available in single-dose vials as a ready-to-use, 9.75 mg/1.3 Ml (7.5 mg/mL) clear, colorless, sterile solution for intramuscular use only)


ARIPIPRAZOLE pills should be taken whole with a full glass of water, once a day. Dosage can be increased only if approved by doctor.

For best results, Aripiprazole should be taken at the same time of the day during the entire course.

Taking the medicine at the same time each day will have the best effect. It will also help you remember when to take it.

Abifily can be taken on both full and an empty stomach.

Always take Aripiprazole exactly as prescribed, do not change the dosage indicated by your doctor. Do not take the medication longer than prescribed.  Follow the directions on your prescription label.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose make sure you take the missed one as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose than skip the missed one. In no case take extra medicine to make up for the missed dose.

How long should I take Aripiprazole?

You should continue taking ARIPIPRAZOLE for as long as your doctor tells you.
ARIPIPRAZOLE will help you control your condition but it will not cure it. This is the reason why you must take ARIPIPRAZOLE on a daily basis. It will take from several day to some weeks to see notorious changes in symptoms. Do not stop taking ARIPIPRAZOLE even if you start feeling better unless your doctor tells you to do so.

While taking Aripiprazole

Do NOT take Abifily if allergic to aripiprazole or to any of the ingredients. Among allergic reactions than may occur are: hives, rash, itching and anaphylaxis.

If breastfeeding – do NOT take Abifily.

Aripiprazole may impair your thinking or reactions, therefore, you are advised to abstain from driving or other activities that requires attentiveness.

Consuming alcohol while taking abifily increases the risk of negative effects.  Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated. Abifily predisposes to dehydration and overheating, thus, drink plenty of plain water, especially in hot weather and if working out.

In case of any side effect, seek medical help as soon as possible.

Aripiprazole side effects

This are the most  common side effects have been reported by patients using Aripiprazole:

  • Agitation
  • Anxiety
  • Blurred vision
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Increased production of saliva
  • Insomnia
  • Light-headedness and/or vertigo
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Shaking
  • Sleepiness
  • Unpleasant sensations in the stomach
  • Unusual tiredness or weakness

Like with any other medication there are things that you should avoid while taking Aripiprazole. Take precautions before driving as this medication may affect or debilitate your reactions. In order to avoid getting dizzy or falling down desist getting up from a sitting or laying position too fast. Aripiprazole may cause dehydration so try to consume plenty of water, especially if you exercise and in hot weather conditions. Please take all the necessary precautions as some side effects of Aripiprazole may develop if you consume alcohol.

Interactions with other medicines

If you are taking any other medicines, tell your doctor or pharmacist.
Aripiprazole may interfere with some drugs. These drugs are:

  • drugs used to treat high blood pressure
  • drugs used to treat bacterial or viral infections
  • cyclosporin (Cysporin; Neoral; Sandimmun)
  • cimetidine (Tagamet; Magicul; Sigmetadine)
  • drugs used to treat brain disorders such as, anxiety, depression, mood swings, epilepsy or seizures, Parkinson's disease or insomnia.
  • drugs used to treat heart rhythm disturbances
  • drugs used to treat bacterial or viral infections


Aripiprazole may change the effects of this drug as well as their supposed outcomes. You have to consult with your doctor, so he may need to change and adjust your dose of Aripiprazole or of the other drugs you are taking.

Studies have shown that drinking grapefruit juice as well as eating it may also alter the effects of Aripiprazole.

Your doctor can provide you with the list of medications or products to be avoid while taking Abifily.

How to store Aripiprazole?

Always maintain medicines out of the reach and sight of children.

Do not use ARIPIPRAZOLE after the expiration date which is stated on the carton. The expiration date is the last day of that month.

Aripiprazole has to be stored in the original package to protect it from humidity.

You should not dispose of medicines via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines that are no longer required.
